The valley to Alta run is two drives in one: a freeway cruise to the bench, then eight miles of SR-210 that behave like no other road in Utah. This page runs the Little Cottonwood verdict, the traction posting, and the cameras in driving order, because the canyon half decides everything.
25 miles | About 40 minutes in free flow | Data: UDOT Traffic
Little Cottonwood Canyon is open. Road surface: Dry. Weather: Fair. No traction restriction is posted for this corridor right now.
Data: UDOT Traffic | UDOT report Nov 4, 9:23 AM MT
From the city, I-215 east and Wasatch Boulevard deliver you to the mouth of Little Cottonwood at Sandy and Cottonwood Heights. Use the freeway time to check the verdict, not the valley sky. The storm that matters is the one stacked against the headwall, 3,700 feet above the light you are sitting at.
On posted days, officers check vehicles here. Class 3 means devices on two drive tires or AWD or 4WD on rated tires with 5/32 inch tread. If your setup is wrong, this is the last legal place to learn it. The ski bus park and ride is right here for a reason.
The first miles are the canyon's gentlest, past the Lisa Falls area, and the cameras show whether the road is wet, packed, or white. Avalanche paths begin crossing above this stretch; a control work closure can hold you at the mouth even on a blue morning.
Past White Pine, the named paths stack up and the road narrows into the canyon's serious half. Following distance is the whole skill set here. If the events list mentions control work, the convoy rhythm of the morning will be set by UDOT's schedule, not yours.
Snowbird comes first, about a mile below the top; Alta is the end of the road at 8,530 feet. The last mile is the steepest and the snowiest, and it is where a canyon wide storm shows its final form. Arrive patient; everyone in front of you drove the same eight miles.
The descent is a brake and gear exercise at nine percent. Ride a low gear, double your following distance mentally and then again on packed snow, and remember the mouth can be 20 degrees warmer than the top. Interlodge and closure notices, when they exist, are in the verdict at the top of this page.
How long does it take to drive from Salt Lake City to Alta?
About 40 minutes in free flow. On storm mornings with a traction check and canyon queues, plan on 90 minutes or do not plan on the canyon at all; the verdict tells you which day it is.
Can I drive to Alta in a rental car?
Only if the rental meets the posted class on the day. When Class 3 is in effect, a two wheel drive rental on ordinary all seasons is not compliant. The UTA ski bus from the mouth is the reliable rental car answer.
Why is the road closed on a clear morning?
Avalanche control work. UDOT closes SR-210 to bring slide paths down on an empty road, usually early, with a posted reopening estimate in the events list.
