Full Park City pageUtah posts traction requirements by class under Administrative Rule R920-6: Class 1 for heavy vehicles, Class 2 for everyone, Class 3 for the Cottonwood Canyons with a 5/32 inch tread rule. Since 2025 the law can be posted 24 hours before a storm and enforced with citations. Our traction law page carries the full rule next to the live in effect now status for every corridor.

Utah County
Every canyon on this page climbs out of the same valley and into different weather. Parleys Canyon gains about 2,700 feet between Salt Lake City and its summit; the Cottonwood canyons gain more in fewer miles, and Alta sits near 8,600 feet. A dry road at the mouth and a snow packed road at the top is not a contradiction, it is the normal shape of a Wasatch storm. That is why this site leads with live verdicts and cameras in driving order instead of a city forecast: the only conditions that matter are the ones on the stretch you are about to drive, at the elevation you are about to reach.
On a storm morning, work the page top to bottom. The verdict tells you whether the corridor is open and what UDOT has posted. The traction chip tells you the class your vehicle has to meet, and on the Cottonwoods that class is the law, enforced with citations since 2025. Then read the cameras in driving order and believe the highest frame that disagrees with the lowest one. If Little Cottonwood is closed for avalanche control, it reopens on UDOT's estimate, not on hope, and Big Cottonwood absorbs the diverted traffic until its own queue fails. The comparison page exists for that exact decision.
The locals' rule is simple: decide before the canyon mouth, because most of these roads give you no graceful way to change your mind. Carry the gear the posted class requires, keep fuel and patience in reserve, and treat a closed gate as information rather than insult. These canyons serve two ski areas apiece at the top, a freight interstate over Parleys, and whole towns of commuters, and they still close when the snow says so. Check the verdict, check the cameras, and let the mountain have the last word.
Is Parleys Canyon open right now?
The Parleys verdict at the top of this page reads live from UDOT Traffic, with the traction posting and current incidents. Every corridor on this site works the same way: live feed first, verdict second, no guessing.
Are the Cottonwood canyons under the traction law today?
Check the traction chips on the Little and Big Cottonwood verdicts above. When UDOT posts the law, the chip names the class. Both canyons are Class 3 segments, the strictest in Utah.
Where do the cameras and conditions come from?
UDOT Traffic, the Utah Department of Transportation's traveler information service. Camera stills are UDOT's own, linked from the UDOT service, and UDOT is credited on every page. This site is not an official UDOT site.
Which canyon should I drive on a storm morning?
The one whose live verdict here says open and moving, at a traction class your vehicle meets. The comparison pages put the corridors side by side for exactly that decision.
