The signature Wasatch drive: I-80 east out of the valley, up Parleys Canyon, over the summit, and down SR-224 into Park City. Two live verdicts cover it, Parleys for the climb and SR-224 for the arrival, and this page puts both on one screen with the cameras in driving order.

Leave Salt Lake City on I-80 east and make your weather decision early. The valley forecast is the least useful number on this drive; by the time you pass the I-215 belt you are committed to the canyon, and the next easy turn around is Lambs Canyon, miles in. Check the Parleys verdict before the belt, not after it.
The canyon mouth is where valley weather ends. The climb gains about 2,700 feet in 13 miles, and the cameras in driving order show the transition: watch the surface change from the mouth frame to the Lambs Canyon frame to the summit frame. When the three disagree, believe the summit.
At about 7,000 feet the road crests and the wind opens up. High profile vehicles feel the gusts off Mountain Dell first, and winter blowing snow can ice the surface even in a light storm. This is the stretch the traction posting is usually about; if the verdict says traction in effect, it means here.
The descent to Kimball Junction is shaded in the morning and holds ice later than the climb. Speed built on the way up is the trap. At the bottom, exit 145 splits the trip: SR-224 south is Park City, straight on is Coalville and Wyoming.
The last six miles are a signalized corridor, and they run on volume, not weather. The SR-224 verdict and junction cameras on this page show whether it is flowing or stacked. On powder mornings and event weeks, the Kimball Junction park and ride bus can be the fastest vehicle on the road.
Canyons Village is signed first, then the Park City base areas, then Old Town. If you are headed to Deer Valley, you cross town on Deer Valley Drive. Check the SR-224 events list once more at the junction; a crash in the corridor changes which base to aim for.
How long is the drive from Salt Lake City to Park City?
About 35 minutes in free flow: 30 for I-80 over Parleys and 10 for SR-224, roughly. Storm postings and incidents can double it; both live verdicts are on this page.
Do I need chains for Park City today?
Only if the Parleys traction posting is in effect, which the Parleys verdict on this page states in UDOT's own terms. SR-224 itself is not a Class 3 canyon segment.
What is the alternative if Parleys closes?
I-84 through Weber Canyon to US-40, or US-40 from Heber. Both are long detours; they earn their keep only when I-80 is actually closed, which the verdict here will say plainly.
